How to Avoid Plagiarism: AI Usage

Bad idea. Don't plagiarize, ever.

Academic Integrity and AI

How AI is involved in your course and at what level is determined by your professor. Be sure to look over your syllabus and contact your professor for any questions. Here are some general rules to have in mind when incorporating AI into an assignment:

  • AI usage, quotes, etc. should always be cited. You can in fact cite AI materials in any citation format.
  • AI can be cleverly hidden in software. Certain translating services or sites like Grammarly that promise reviews of your text may in fact be rewriting your papers using AI. Stay away from any site to review your papers using AI. Grammar checking tools in Word and Google Docs are available and oftentimes your professor is more concerned with the content of the essay/assignment than your mastery of things like spelling and punctuation. You can also reach out to the Writing Center for help at any point during the writing process for help.
  • Submitting work that is not your own is plagiarism. If you are found to be submitting AI created materials as your own work, you may be reprimanded by your professor or the school.
  • AI is not for research. It does not generate reliable sources and often hallucinates. If you ask AI to return you a list of articles or books in your field, many may be made up or provide inaccurate information. Contact the Library with help in your research and finding out how to use scholarly sources in your assignments.
  • Remember, you are pursuing a degree to show the skills you have acquired. If you can not think critically, communicate effectively, or perform the basic requirements for your future career, the only one who suffers is you. Don't outsource your diploma to AI!
